Founded in the late 1940s, ASDA operates as a large chain of department stores in the U.K. primarily specializing in grocery sales. Initially conceptualized as Associated Dairies & Farm Stores Limited, ASDA set out to provide low-cost, farm-fresh products to customers out of convenient locations. ASDA later incorporated big box formats featuring household goods and other miscellaneous products in addition to produce and grocery items. The growing company received further backing in 1999 after becoming a wholly owned subsidiary of Walmart. The large network of stores includes over 560 retail locations.

Products available at ASDA stores range from health and beauty products and general grocery items to home goods, electronics, floral, photo, and gift items. Primarily operating as grocery stores, ASDA locations sell produce, meats, dairy products, seafood, baked goods, frozen foods, and non-perishable food items. The wide selections of products sold in addition to grocery items spur millions of regular customers annually. Both name-brand and house-brand products adorn ASDA shelves. The retail chain offers regular discounts and sales on items and sells products at already competitive prices. A prominent presence on social media and an online store also increase customer bases and draw new patrons to store locations on a regular basis.

The City of Leeds, West Yorkshire, England, represents the birthplace of ASDA in 1949. Then known as Associated Dairies & Farm Stores Limited, ASDA eventually outgrew the initial location and expanded throughout the United Kingdom. The company assumed the current brand moniker, ASDA, in 1965 after a merger with three competing grocery store chains. ASDA stores fell under ownership of Asda-MFI in the 1980s. The retailer changed ownership again after American retail company Walmart bought ASDA in 1999. ASDA continued to flourish under Walmart proprietorship and grew to include approximately 565 stores by 2013.
